Palmetto200 to benefit YMCA |
I am excited to tell you about a new endurance event in South Carolina called the Palmetto200 (www.palmetto200.com) on April 30 (Friday) - May 1 (Saturday). Participants in the relay will be given an option to raise funds for the YMCA to benefit our Black Achievers program. The YMCA Black Achievers program is a national college readiness program designed to help African-American and other teens of color set and pursue high educational and career goals. All funds raised will go directly to help the students pay for their annual Black College Tour. This year, the students will be visiting HBCU’s in and around Washington, DC.
This race is being managed by two of our very own Y-Guides and Y-Princess members (Kirk Sadler and Brian Malak). For those of you that know Kirk, he and his wife Julie have volunteered many times as tribe chiefs and resident photographers for some of our YMCA events. Having met with Kirk and Brian a few times they have explained to me that that success of this event only comes if there are enough volunteers. To that end, I am asking you to consider volunteering for the Palmetto200. There are many great benefits to us all. For the YMCA, we can help make sure to provide a solid experience for the participants which helps our fundraising prospects and the telling of the YMCA story to many who would normally not here it. For you, you have the option of participating in a very unique running event that even if you are not a runner you will find the experience quite memorable as the team atmosphere is euphoric. For you, if your employer offers “volunteer for vacation” credit that too can be arranged.
So you ask, what is required? There are 37 exchange zones spread out between Congaree National Park and Folly Beach (http://www.palmetto200.com/exchange_zones_8.html). At each exchange zone there is a need for at least two volunteers to check runners / teams in and out of an exchange. Safety is very important. Additionally volunteers will provide some guidance / directions / rules enforcement for teams about the next leg of the race using information provided by Kirk and Brian. Finally, the need is for volunteers to man each exchange point for 4 – 6 hours.
Of course, you are welcome to say the heck with volunteering I want to run it!
